GREY IN OR OUT?: Hampstead Mayor William Steinberg invoked a rarely-used veto power last week to overturn his council’s 3-2 decision to remove lawyer Julius Grey from representing the town in a case involving a new dog run. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>DOG RUN OPEN: The controversial dog run, which has sparked a lawsuit, recently officially began operating. Previously, a temporary facility was open. Dogs must have a valid Hampstead license, and dog owners are being urged to follow the rules posted at the facility. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>PREVENT POTENTIAL TRAGEDY: Hampstead resident Brian Salpeter says a chronic speeding problem exists on Glenmore Road in Hampstead, and charges that the result was a car that ended up skidding on his driveway and coming to a stop on his lawn Nov. 2. $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>HAMPSTEAD’S GIFT: Hampstead’s town council and employees have donated an $1,100 cheque to the Royal Montreal Regiment, to buy holiday gifts for the eight soldiers who are in Afghanistan during the holidays. The donation was an initiative of the town employees and the donation was matched by the council. “This offer symbolizes our appreciation for our soldiers’ invaluable service,” says a Hampstead statement. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>COFFEE DAY: Westmount is urging residents to come to Calories Restaurant at 4114 Ste. Catherine West 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday Dec. 13 to meet police officers from Station 12, who will be serving coffee. Proceeds from the sale of coffee will go to the Quebec Society for Disabled Children. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>BUDGET MEETINGS: Hampstead and Côte St. Luc are both holding budget meetings 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17. Hampstead’s meeting is at the Adessky Community Centre in Hampstead Park and Côte St. Luc’s is at city hall, 5801 Cavendish Blvd. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>TOWN HOUSE PROPOSAL: A new 21-unit townhouse condominium complex project is being proposed for Marc Chagall Avenue in Côte St. Luc, District 2 councillor Mike Cohen announced this week. Cohen told area constituents about the project during a recent District 2 meeting, saying that the project will have to be approved by Côte St. Luc council as it involves a zoning change from commercial to residential. Cohen says the city’s planning advisory committee believes the complex would be a “good fit for the area”. Cohen also said the units will have four bedrooms, with two underground parking spots per home. Units will cost from $400,000 to $490,000 each. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>GREEN PARTY PROGRESS: The Green Party’s provincial D’Arcy McGee riding association voted for its executive council during a recent association meeting. “The Green Party of Quebec is now well rooted in D’Arcy McGee and the support for our organization is growing day by day,” says Robert Leibner, the new riding association president. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>FRASER-HICKSON FUTURE: A 10-year, $125-million program aimed at bringing Montreal libraries up to Canadian standards may bring good news for NDG residents who lack such services. Borough councillor Warren Allmand is hoping CDN-NDG will apply for grants from the provincial program. The recently closed Fraser-Hickson library was not run by the city, but rather by a non-profit organization that offered free services to residents. It remains to be seen if it is eligible for the new program. Borough mayor Michael Applebaum also hinted a vacant lot on Benny Farm could be used for a new library. $"/> $"/>• • • $"/> $"/>HOURS EXTENDED: Beginning in January, CDN-NDG libraries will be open longer, upsetting some of the staff. Library technician Pierre Gélinas said increasing hours to 53 per week will take its toll on workers. He said libraries were open 38 hours per week in 2003 and has steadily increased since then. “We’ve kept quiet until now, but better services for residents are being offered on the backs of workers.” Borough mayor Michael Applebaum said he would meet with library technicians to address their concerns. $"/> $"/>
